Can parents in recovery live with their children in sober housing?

Yes. According to Imprint News, 363 family-based recovery programs across 48 states allow parents to live with their children during recovery.

These aren't traditional sober living homes. They're specialized programs designed for families staying together. The Family First Prevention Services Act specifically allows children to remain with their parent in residential substance abuse treatment, Imprint News reports.

This matters more than the numbers suggest. One in four U.S. children live with a parent who has a substance use disorder, according to the University of Michigan Medical School. That's 17.7 million kids. When parents need recovery housing, keeping families together prevents another layer of trauma.

The programs work. Research by Merry et al. found that abstinence rates jump from 11% at entry to 68% at six months. Parents get sober. Kids stay home.

Finding one takes research. These 363 programs are run by 299 different organizations, Imprint News found. Some are residential treatment centers with family wings. Others are sober living homes that welcome children. Each has different rules about ages, custody requirements, and length of stay.

The alternative is often foster care. Over 170,000 children entered the system in 2024 alone, according to AFCARS FY2024 Preliminary Estimates. Family-based recovery programs offer a different path. One where getting sober doesn't mean losing your kids.
