Why Does Staying 90+ Days in Sober Living Matter?

New research confirms what recovery professionals have long suspected: residents who stay in sober living homes for 90 days or longer have dramatically better outcomes than those who leave earlier.

The numbers tell the story. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, people who complete 30-day programs maintain sobriety at rates of just 15-30% after one year. But stretch that stay to 90 days or more? Success rates jump to 55-70%. Extended care programs of six months or longer see the highest success rates: 70-85% maintaining sobriety at the one-year mark, NIDA research shows.

This doesn't surprise anyone working in recovery housing. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has recommended at least 90 days for maximum benefit. Real sober living facilities see this play out daily-one facility reports residents averaging 254 days, while another tracks an average stay of 166 days.

The first month is about detox and adjustment. The second month is learning to live sober. Month three is when the real work begins. That's when you build habits, relationships, and coping skills that actually stick.

If you're considering sober living, don't plan for 30 days. Plan for at least three months. Be open to staying longer if it's working.
